Howden is one of the prettiest places along the M62 corridor and Howden Minster is one of the most exciting historic buildings in East Yorkshire. It was built by the Prince Bishops of Durham in the Middle Ages to serve Howdenshire but suffered badly after the Reformation when the townspeople kept the nave as their parish church, leaving the East End to fall into ruin (now in the guardianship of English Heritage).
Today, the Minster Parish covers the town of Howden and surrounding villages & hamlets including Barmby-on-the-Marsh, Asselby, Knedlington, Belby, Howden Dyke, Skelton, Kilpin, Balkholme and Sand Hall.
We are part of the Howden Team Ministry of Howden Minster, St Peter's Laxton, St John of Beverley Wressle, St Stephen's Newport, Holy Trinity Blacktoft and St Michael's Eastrington. We have a Team Rector, a Team Vicar, a retired Priest, a Reader, a retired Reader and a team of Registered Parish Assistants.
Major restoration work took place between 2006 and 2011. We are striving to serve the whole of the local community offering a variety of styles of worship. We have strong links with our local Church of England Infant School in Howden. We support the Arts and Howden Minster hosts a variety of music concerts. We have recently become part of the Yorkshire Turner Trail.
We are usually open every day during daylight hours. Please contact us if planning a special journey to avoid disappointment, as events (funerals etc) sometimes mean that the Minster is unavailable for visitors. The exterior of the ruined East End (English Heritage) is viewable at any reasonable time.
